With the 2015 season of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Race Series well underway, the race teams, drivers, and fans are soaking up the pure racing experience of watching a field full of Mazda Miatas carve through curves and make laps on some of the nation’s best road courses. Meanwhile, Mazda is making plans to kick this race series up to another level with its next-generation 2016 Miata racecar design, which is already being tested by legendary Mazda driver Tom Long.
Long’s job will be to work with the engineering team to test the myriad combinations of brake, tire, and suspension set-ups for the 2016 Miata racers and determine the best stock layout for next year’s race season. Ever enthusiastic, he said, “The lightweight nimble chassis design, along with its increased power-to-weight ratio, makes this new platform balanced and a real thrill to drive.”
